Personal growth is like a houseplant

And I have killed enough in my day to learn a thing or two from it.

Personal growth is like a house plant. You buy it with high hopes that it will thrive, bloom, and be pretty to look at. I’ve killed a lot of houseplants in my time, so let me expand.

BUT WHAT IS THE REALITY SARAH? WHAT IS IT?

1. Growth is not always linear: Sometimes you're thriving, other times you're just surviving. Sometimes you are in beginning stages of growth, sometimes you are blooming. We don’t grow without nurturing. Just watering may not be enough. We need to look at different things for different plants (read: phases of our lives).

2. Growth is rarely immediate: Patience is key (as an impatient person….I get it). You can't phone in personal development (trust me, I've tried). Just like you can’t expect to plant a bulb and the next day have a full ass grown flower.

3. It doesn’t always feel good.  We must stretch, reach, get uncomfortable, and often grow through challenging environments. You think some of the biggest and most gorgeous cacti here haven’t SEEN SOME SHIT? Think again.

4. GROWTH IS WORTH IT. Even if you end up with a few weird leaves along the way. Or they fall off completely. Let em’ go.

Now that I have killed the houseplant that is this metaphor, I urge you to keep growing. If you need help – I got you. For whatever kind of plant you want to be.
